KTA Bridge Raisings Phase 1, 2 & 3 – Wichita-Emporia-Topeka, KS
Project Overview
This project was unique and required us to put our problem-solving skills to the test. The problem was the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) had low vertical clearance for the existing roadway due to existing bridges overhead. Our goal was to increase the clearance, allowing more freight traffic to safely pass through Kansas along this critical route.
Our team worked alongside the engineering partner on the project to design and execute a plan to permanently raise the bridges using specialized hydraulic jacks and other equipment and tools to safely control the process. In addition, new concrete abutments, concrete repairs and pier protection were completed while coordinating schedules for multiple bridge locations concurrently.
The Wildcat team (Wildcat Concrete Services & Klaver) have successfully raised 33 bridges to date along I-35 extending from the Kansas-Oklahoma state line to the Wichita, Emporia and Topeka areas.
